Researchers testing earthquake-resistant concrete
Researchers testing earthquake-resistant concrete, a fiber-reinforced concrete made with polymer-based fibers, fly ash and other industrial additives,
This new concrete has many advantages:
1- It is highly seismic-resistant. In fact, the researchers claim that only a 10mm thick reinforcing layer is enough to make a wall able to withstand a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. That's only 1/3 of an inch!
2- It is also quite sustainable. Compared to a traditional concrete, 70% of the product is made with fly ash, a by-product of coal production, recycling it back into production.
Fiber reinforcement allows unreinforced brick walls and concrete foundations to bend and not break during an earthquake.
